Great Location for Exploring Michigan Avenue

Tucked just a two blocks off Michigan, this is a great base for exploring the area on foot. My five-year-old granddaughter and I were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go during a quick girls' trip. There is some bothersome noise outside the hotel, but thankfully, it wasn't all night. The staff here was friendly and the room was quite clean. The corner king was much smaller than I expected and very dark, but it fulfilled our needs.

We had a reservation for one night. January 11th as hubby had a very early appt at NW Hospital Clinic the next morning, January 12th. Due the incoming wind and snow storm, the clinic cancelled the appointment on Wednesday, January 10th. Hubby immediately called the hotel and cancelled our reservation. But -- because we had booked through Bookings.com, we also cancelled through them too. Booking asked the hotel to refund our money but the hotel didn't honor Bookings.com request and charged our credit card $150 -- which was more than the original price quoted. Still no response from the Fairfield Inn. On another note, Hubby had an appointment at the Univ of Iowa Clinic on Feb 12, so because of the Super Bowl we made a reservation at Drury Inn, Iowa City to stay the night. But late afternoon, the doctor called and cancelled the Monday early appt due to having the flu. We had already checked into our room so were very unsure if Drury will charge us for the room since we had already checked in. Surprise - Drury said absolutely no problem, there would be no charges and have a safe trip home. Now that is what I call Customer Service.

Nice hotel, central location, a few improvements could go a long way. We found this to be a nice & clean hotel for our family trip to Chicago. It was centrally located with Uber/Lyfts easy to get. The hotel had lovely holiday decor which was a nice touch. The breakfast was comprehensive and nice. A few improvements could go a long way to make this a five star property. 1) offer water bottles to guests, or leave them in the room at no-charge. This seems like a basic amenity 2) the entrance door to the hotel was not working (the automatic push button was not working). This can cause accessibility issues and the door is extremely heavy. 3) extra effort to sound proof the hotel / windows would be good. This is hotel is vertically close to a hospital and even on the higher floors the noise is quite audible. I would stay at this location again.

My family and I stayed here for six nights during the week of the Chicago Marathon. When we arrived the concierge was quite casual and unwelcoming - when I asked if the sofa bed had been made up for my children (as previously requested in an email), her response was a shrug of the shoulders and 'Dunno, if it hasn't there should be sheets and pillows somewhere in the room for you to do yourself' - ummm okay, I am paying $4000 for this room and that's the response you give?! The room was good, but very noisy. Our window faced out over what appeared to be the roof of the lobby and its air con unit, which was noisy 24 hours a day. We had a king suite with sofa bed which is one of the largest rooms in the hotel I believe. The sofa bed was incredibly old and uncomfortable and I felt sorry for my children who had to sleep in it. Our king bed was thankfully very comfortable. This is a very old building that has a lot of signs of age, like peeling paint, mould etc and could definitely use a refurbishment. There was a doorman who was absolutely lovely and greeted us with a smile each day. The hotel's free breakfast is pretty decent and includes things like waffles, bagels, fruit etc but can get very busy at times, so the sooner you eat, the better. The location of this hotel is it's highlight - one block back from Magnificent Mile and three blocks from the underpass to Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. Transport options are plentiful but the location means walking around is easy and often the best way to find hidden gems. As I was doing the marathon, I was interacting with a lot of other marathoners staying in different hotels, who remarked on what their hotels were doing to support their runners. Things like a special early breakfast, massages, happy hour... the Fairfield didn't even acknowledge the marathon, which literally takes over the city on the Sunday. I felt that was a missed opportunity that really should have been utilised. Would I go to Chicago again? Absolutely. Would I stay at the Fairfield again? Absolutely not.

As others have noted, this is a solid budget pick in an unremarkable but convenient Chicago neighborhood. Having the lake so close was nice, and there are some restaurants to grab a quick bite if you're hungry after a day of sightseeing or work. Buses go up and down Michigan Ave and make getting to other parts of the city easy. Only flag: Northwestern's ER is a block away. Sometimes at night a siren woke me up, but my room was on the street side, so that's not a surprise. Breakfast is good, cleaning staff are excellent. Beds comfy.
